General Description

Colorless, volatile, flammable liquid with a petroleum-like odor. It is insoluble in water and lighter than it. Soluble in most organic solvents such as ether and chloroform. It acts as a solvent for waxes, fats, resins, etc. The liquid normally contains isomers and other similar hydrocarbons. Commercial hexane is a mixture of n-hexane and other hydrocarbons such as methylpentane, methyl cyclopentane, cyclopentane, methyl hexane, etc.
Applications: as rubber solvent, cements, adhesives, paints and oils, in the extraction of vegetable oils (aromatic). It is also used as an alcohol denaturant, in low temperature thermometers and as a reaction medium in polymerizations.
